HEARTIST
A creative portrait of Faroese artist Sigrun Gunnarsdóttir and the mountainous landscapes that inspire her. Warm, colourful and imaginative, just as her paintings have made her the country’s most beloved artist.
A figure draped in shades of purple, pink and violet wanders through the overwhelming Faroese countryside. 72-year-old artist Sigrun Gunnarsdóttir is out on her daily walk around the lake near her house which inspires her art. She is constantly in motion, constantly at work: painting, hanging, playing ping-pong with her husband. Gunnarsdóttir’s colourful and naive art has made her one of her country’s most important and beloved painters. An artist with her heart in the right place. The picturesque ‘Heartist’ unfolds a life story that begins with her grandfather, the Faroe Islands’ first landscape painter, and continues through her years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen to a life as a painter, mother and grandmother – and to a very special commission to paint a portrait of Queen Margrethe. The paintings speak with in their own imaginative language along the way.
